HTML is ideal for creating static websites where text and images are placed at fixed positions. But it doesn't really support dynamic sites, where text, images, and animations are moving around on the screen.
Animation is the process whereby a series of still images is displayed very rapidly in order to create the illision of movement. A very simple example of this are the flip book drawings, which we must've all done at school, where a stick man (or woman) is made to appear to run, jump, stand on it's head or some other activity. Animation on Web pages seems to be much more sophisticated but it essentially uses the same techniques.
Traditionally, these effects were achieved with animated GIF images. This is one of the simplest forms of animation on the Web. An animated GIF file is composed of a series of bitmap images, called frames, which are displayed in turn.
Flash is the current state of the art animation medium. Not only able to display animated graphics it has the ability to have sounds embedded it its files and offers a considerable degree of interactivity.
Closely related to Flash animation, indeed the same file format and player plug-in are used, Flash buttons offer the opportunity to take Web page navigation into a new dimension. Principally intended to offer user interactivity they have the capability to also boast animation and sound effects amonst their attributes.
