Flash animation uses vector graphics, this means that the file size is much smaller than would be found in an animated GIF. The other thing that differentiates Flash from GIF animation is that Flash processes the file 'on the fly' one advantage for this is that only the areas that change from frame to frame are redrawn rather than the method that GIF animation uses whereby each frame has to be rendered and drawn in its entirity.

A further advantage of Flash is that it is possible to embed sound information along with the visual data. Thus music videos, as here, or cartoons can be distributed.

So compared to animated GIFs, the advantages of Flash are that:

Flash movies load much faster.

Flash movies allow can include a soundtrack.

Flash movies can use more than 256 colors
